'Braving' it

Toronto_fosterhoward"From now on, I'm going to call this the Toronto Love Fest," said Jodie Foster, on stage prior to the premiere of "The Brave One" at the Ryerson Theatre at the Toronto International Film Festival. She was talking about the generous applause she and co-star Terrence Howard received from the audience. The festival has a lot of memories for her, as her directorial debut "Little Man Tate" debuted here. Howard concurred, saying it was here, where "Crash" was unveiled in 2004, that he was cinematically born. The revenge thriller "The Brave One" had the audience pretty much enthralled, and many cheered when the bad guys get their comeuppance. But just as many did not. Not because they weren't enjoying the film, but because the moment isn't necessarily a cut-and-dried cathartis; there¹s tragedy in it, a soul cracking. (Borys Kit)
