Seeing Red

Red -- the startup that is developing the Red One 4K digital cinematography camera for $17,500 -- is once again creating a stir in the cinematography community. Red founder Jim Jannard (who is also the founder of Oakley Sunglasses) has announced the new camera on his company's user Web site. The company's second product, dubbed Scarlet, is described as "our pocket professional camera." Jannard reported, "Prototypes will be shown at NAB. It is not a competitor or replacement for the Red One." (The 2008 NAB Convention will be held from April 11-17 in Las Vegas.)
Red spokesperson Ted Schilowitz declined comment beyond the news in the posting. Red has already started to roll out the Red One. The company has revealed that it is being used or there are plans to use it on Steven Soderbergh's "Guerrilla," "The Argentine" and "The Informant"; Timur Bekmambetov's "Wanted"; and Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's "Game." It is also expected to be used on the 3-D film "The Dark Country." Earlier this year, Peter Jackson directed a short set during World War I titled "Crossing the Line," which was lensed with two Red prototypes.
