'Sex and the City,' except the city is in France

By Steven Zeitchik

So what if the talk about "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opening Cannes doesn't come to pass -- but another U.S. franchise takes that slot anyway?

The gossip mill is churning that the new "Sex and the City" movie could land a Cannes spot, and in fact could end up at the Palais des Festivals on opening night. Carrie, of course, decided to leave France in the last episode of the show's HBO run, but why not a little trip back to the land of brie and fashion, especially if you get to bring your friends (and perhaps Michael Lynne and Bob Shaye as well; if Jeff Bewkes comes too, that's a march down the red carpet we'd pay to see).

The timing, at least, would work. The Michael Patrick King pic gets released in many territories between May 28 and May 30, two weeks after the May 14 opening of the fest. And the television show has had broad appeal overseas--a little too much appeal, in some cases.

A "SATC" opening would push "Indy" into a centerpiece slot or perhaps even to closing-night status. That may make the more restless paparazzi a little irked but would have the sort-of brilliant effect of keeping a lot of people at the fest longer than they might otherwise stay.

One trivia bit -- and maybe something that makes this less likely -- an opening night featuring either "Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" or "Sex and the City" would mean that Cannes has opened for the third straight year with an English-language film (Wong Kar-Wai's "My Blueberry Nights" and "The Da Vinci Code" opened in '07 and '06). That hasn't happened in a decade, when "I Shot Andy Warhol," "The Fifth Element" and "Primary Colors" opened in successive years between 1996 and 1998. Still, we're already a little queasy just thinking about the Carrie on the Croisette headlines. A suivre...
